Zamalek left winger Mohamed Abdel-Shafi has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the Cairo giants until 2017, the club said Thursday.
"After meeting with board member Ayman Younis and administrative manager Hamada Anwar, Abdel-Shafi has agreed on the terms and conditions to remain with the club until 2017," stated the popular club on their official website.
The agreement came after weeks of negotiations, with the player reportedly asking for LE2 million a year from the cash-stripped club.
Several key players like midfielders Ibrahim Salah, Alex Mendomo, left-back Sabri Rahil and striker Abdoulaye Cisse have fled the Whites due to lack of funds.
Earlier this month, sports minister Taher Abou-Zeid appointed a new interim board under the leadership of Kalam Darwich to guide the club out of this crisis.
Zamalek has recently made several bold signings, such as striker Ahmed Ali and playmaker Moemen Zakareya, to appease fan anger. The contract extension of Abdel-Shafi seems to be another step in that direction.
Starting his international career with Petroleum club ENPPI, the 28-year-old player joined the Whites from Mahalla in 2009. In the same year, Abdel-Shafi was called to the Pharaohs, with whom he aspired to win the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
