The next three Egyptian Premier League seasons will be played using a two group format, the Egyptian Football Association announced on Saturday.

Next season the top league will have 22 teams divided into two groups. Five teams will be relegated at the end of the season and three promoted, leaving 20 teams in the subsequent season, the EFA said via its official website.

The following season will see five teams relegated and three promoted, leaving 18 teams in the top league in the third season, the EFA concluded.

The winner and runner-up in each group will qualify for the semifinal.

Egypt’s premier domestic competition was held with the same format in the 1957-58, 1962-63, 1963-64, 1975-76 and 2012-13 seasons.

The 2012-2013 season was canceled for security reasons.

The new season is expected to kick off on 30 November.
