Two second-half goals earned an injury-hit Ahly squad a 2-0 away win against El-Entag El-Harby on Thursday as they prepare for life after the retirement of icon Mohamed Abou-Treika.
Abdallah El-Said broke the deadlock in the 69th minute from a penalty kick as Amr Fahim was penalised for bringing down Ahmed “Manga” Nabil inside the box.
Young striker Amr Gamal secured the full points of the game after meeting a precise low cross from in-form Manga to score from close range.
The defending champions are now top of the Egyptian Premier League Group A, having surmounted their injury woes before the game.
Coach Mohamed Youssef had to do without several key elements: Walid Soliman, Ahmed Fathi, Hossam Ashour, Sherif Abdel-Fadil and Sayed Moawad.
Striker Emad Meteb had also to leave the game just before the break due to injury, making way for rising striker Amr Gamal.
The situation of the Red Devils is critical as they try to rebuild their squad and prepare for life after inspirational midfielder Abou-Treika retired earlier this month.
The former Ahly and Egypt playmaker have been orchestrating the team’s play for the past decade, making it the most glorious era in the club’s history with a host of prizes, including five African Champions League titles.
Youssef will have to rely more on his young talents who, judging by tonight's performance, are up to the challenge.
