With a £11 million offer, English Premier League giants Chelsea have officially joined the race with Liverpool and Newcastle to obtain the services of Egypt and Basel forward Mohamed Salah before the winter transfer window closes this January, news website Mirror reported on Thursday.

Liverpool were reportedly close to signing Salah but the Chelsea bid for the Egyptian star delayed the completion of the deal.

The Daily Mail believes that Swiss side Basel will allow the Egyptian star to leave the club for £16 million.

The 21-year-old attacker has proven to be one of the most promising players in Europe after leading Basel to the local double last season, his first in Europe. His stellar play earned him 2013's Swiss Golden Player Award, given to the best player in Switzerland.
