Nigeria’s president Goodluck Jonathan has praised his country’s U-20 national football team after clinching the title of the African Youth Championship.
The Flying Eagles defeated Cameroon 3-2 in the final on Monday to return back home with the precious trophy.
According to football website Kickoff, the president praised the team’s "doggedness and resilience" in the tournament in an official statement, affirming that they made the country proud.
The African youth champions coach John Obuh has dedicated the trophy to the newly elected president Jonathan, who assured the squad continuing support from the federal government as they prepare for the World Cup next July.
The six-time African youth championship winners arrived in Lagos on Monday afternoon and were invited to a reception by the Minister of Sports.
