Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has played down the prospects of him returning to Marseille because "he needs to have a project".

The 37-year-old, who left Chelsea at the end of the Premier League season, told the Ivorian media he wants to win trophies and not "just play."

"It's not a question of money. I like to have a project. And Marseille, which I know well, does not have a project," Drogba said.

"They have sold their best players, whom they let go till the end of their contracts. I'm talking about Andre Ayew, Andre-Pierre Gignac ... and they'll lose more.

Drogba scored 19 goals in 35 appearances for Marseille in 2004, helping them reach the UEFA Cup final 11 years ago.

"I don't want to go to Marseille to just play. If I go somewhere, it's to win, and I want to win. The question has been coming up for 10 years," he added.

Drogba re-signed for Chelsea last year after leaving in 2012 following a highly successful eight-year spell with the London club.

"There have been times when I could have returned, but the timing wasn't right. And each time my name comes up when it's time to renew season tickets. I don't want people to use me for financial purposes," he concluded.

Drogba has won four Premier League titles with Chelsea, three League Cups, four FA Cups and the Champions League. Many clubs are reportedly interested in landing him in the summer, including New York Red Bulls.
