An unconvincing Ghana side failed to open their World Cup qualifying group campaign with a home victory after being held to a frustrating goalless draw with lowly Uganda in Tamale on Friday.

A dull affair saw the Ghanaians come close to scoring in the first half through Jordan Ayew, who saw his effort go wide of the post in the 33^rd minute in what was the hosts’ only real chance of the half.

After the break, the Black Stars – who eye their fourth consecutive World Cup appearance - looked dangerous from set-pieces on more than one occasion, albeit without managing to find the back of Uganda’s net.

The scoreless draw comes in the best interests of Ghana’s Group E rivals Egypt, who visit Congo on Sunday.
