An unconvincing Ghana side failed to open their World Cup qualifying group campaign with a home victory after being held to a frustrating goalless draw with lowly Uganda in Tamale on Friday.

A dull affair saw the Ghanaians come close to scoring in the first half through Jordan Ayew, who saw his effort go wide of the post in the 33rd minute in what was the hosts’ only real chance of the half.

After the break, the Black Stars – who eye their fourth consecutive World Cup appearance - looked dangerous from set-pieces on more than one occasion, albeit without managing to find the back of Uganda’s net.

The scoreless draw comes in the best interests of Ghana’s Group E rivals Egypt, who visit Congo on Sunday.
