Uganda proved too good for Burundi, easing to a 3-1 victory in the opening Group A game of the Nile Basin friendly tournament Wednesday.
Striker Geofrey Massa, who is currently playing for Egyptian second division side Telecom Egypt, could have put Uganda in front after 16 minutes but his penalty was blocked by the Burundi keeper and he failed to find the net on the rebound.
Massa’s strike partner Vincent Kayizi made amends though on 35 minutes after his shot from inside the area took a deflection and flew into the back of the net.
Burundi leveled the score four minutes later, but Uganda regained their one-goal advantage with a 55th minute goal.
Uganda made sure of victory in stoppage time when Owen Kasule struck from close range after making the most of a low cross.
Tournament hosts Egypt take on Tanzania in the other group game in Wednesday’s late kick-off.
Earlier in the day, Kenya claimed a surprise 1-0 win over the more fancied Sudan in Group B.
