Kenya missed out on the chance of reaching the semifinals of the Nile Basin friendly tournament after slumping to a 1-0 defeat by the Democratic Republic of Congo in Cairo on Saturday.

A 1-0 victory over Sudan in their tournament opener put Kenya in pole position to advance from the three-team Group B, but they were outplayed by DR Congo.

DR Congo claimed all three points after forward Lofo Bongeli converted a debatable penalty in the 28th minute.

Kenya, who needed a draw to ensure they would book a last-four ticket, tried to hit DR Congo on a counter attack after the interval but failed to make a breakthrough.

DR Congo and Kenya have three points each but the former still has a game in hand.

Sudan, who lie at the bottom after losing to Kenya in their first match, have no choice but to defeat DR Congo to stand any chance of reaching the semifinals.
