DR Congo ended on top of Group B
An injury time penalty from TP Mazembe striker Lofo Bongeli earned DR Congo the full points of their game against Sudan 2-1, on Tuesday, to end on top of the Group B of the Nile Basin tournament.
Salakiaku Matondo opened the scoring in the 36th minute from an amazing swerving shot to put The Leopards ahead.
The Sudanese bounced back in the game after the break and managed to get the equaliser thanks to a blunder from DR Congo keeper Robert Kidiabe allowing Mohanad Al-Taher’s free kick to go in the back of the net.
The referee whistled a controversial penalty to DR Congo in the 93rd minute while the TV replay showed that the Congolese striker Ghislain Mvete went down untouched.
Bongeli scored the winner from the spot to put his team on top of the group with six points three ahead of Kenya who defeated Sudan 1-0 in the first round.
DR Congo will face Uganda while Kenya will play Egypt in the semi-finals.
