Moroccan side Raja lodged a complaint to African football governing body (CAF) against the referee of Sunday’s match against Zamalek in the CAF Champions League semifinal, the Casablanca-based club announced on Tuesday.

The White Knights earned a precious first-leg advantage; beating the hosts 1-0 in a game that witnessed controversial decisions by Cameroonian referee Allium Niant amid objections from Raja players.

Zamalek will host Raja in the second leg at Cairo Stadium on Saturday.

“Yesterday, Raja Club Athletic sent CAF an official statement to express their deep disapproval of the performance of the referees appointed for the first leg of CAFCL semi-final against Zamalek SC,” Raja said in a statement via their official Facebook. page on Tuesday.

Right after the loss, Raja coach Jamal Sellami said his team were undone by costly refereeing errors.

"The referee made some mistakes; we should have at least been awarded a penalty during the game. The result was unfair, we deserved at least a draw," Sellami told the post-match news conference.

Raja players had several penalty shouts throughout the game, most notably when Soufiane Rahimi fell in the area after coming in contact with Zamalek full back Ahmed Eid in the first half and a second-half handball on defender Mohamed Abdel-Ghani.

But Niant turned their appeals down.

Zamalek are bidding for their sixth Champions League title, and the first since they defeated Raja 1-0 on aggregate in a two-legged final in 2002.

Raja were recently crowned Moroccan champions after a breathtaking race with Wydad Casablanca, which was settled on the final day of the season.
