Manchester United and AC Milan are currently holding talks over a potential friendly meeting in the New Year, according to the BBC.

Twenty-time English champions Manchester United and 18-time-Italian league winners AC Milan have no European commitments this season, following a disappointing finish to their respective 2013-14 league campaigns.

United could only end a nightmarish league season under then-manager David Moyes on a low note, finishing in an uncharacteristic seventh position to miss out on both the Champions League and Europa League competitions.

Likewise, AC Milan finished eighth of the Serie A table last season. Given that, the fear of fatigue due to hectic schedules is not a concern for either of the two highly-decorated clubs this season.

"This is something we have been talking about for a few weeks and we have a committed interest to do something together," AC Milan's director Umberto Gandini said.

A date and a location have yet to be determined though. United manager Louis van Gaal has asked the club's vice chairman Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold that the team play other top clubs in midweek slots -- formerly occupied by European fixtures.

Three-time-UEFA Champions League holders United, who missed out on Europe's premier competition for the first time in 19 years, enjoyed massive crowd attendance during their pre-season 3-1 friendly win over Real Madrid in Michigan this summer.
