Manchester United are ready to splash a £60m for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller as a replacement for outgoing striker Robin Van Persie, the Daily Star reported.
After the Holland hitman had agreed a four-year deal with Fenerbahce, United will now be looking for a reliable replacement in a frontline clearly suffering from the lack of firepower.
Having sold Danny Welbeck to Arsenal the previous summer, sent flop loan-signing Radamel Falcao back to Monaco, United were left with Wayne Rooney and youngster James Wilson as the only fit and recognized strikers.
Despite the return of Xavier Hernandez from his loan spell at Real Madrid, the Mexico international is currently nursing a collarbone injury, further increasing the onus on manager Louis van Gaal to add another striker this summer.
And having pursued Muller during the past seasons, Van Gaal looks determined to snap the German international this time around after securing the services of Holland sensation Memphis Depay for a fee of £25m.
For his part, Muller - whose Bayern Munich contract runs out in 2019- expressed his delight over United's reported interest in him, saying he could be well tempted to join the English side should they meet his wage demands.
After a faltering first season at United's helm, which eventually saw the Red Devils only finish fourth of the Premier League standings, Van Gaal is now keen to make decent signings to challenge for trophies the next campaign.
