Merson, 43, was quizzed by police after the Mercedes car he was driving was in collision with a lorry registered by Britain's Ministry of Defence in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
"Following a roadside breath test, the 43-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol," a Warwickshire police spokeswoman said.
Merson, who has battled alcohol and drug addictions in the past, was quoted by The Daily Mirror as saying he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
"I fell asleep and just hit the central reservation. I banged my head on the windscreen and the car is a write-off," said Merson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports television.
