UEFA fines Polish club Legia for ‘Jihad’ banner

UEFA has fined Polish club Legia Warsaw €10,000 ($13,500) after fans displayed an “illicit banner” at a Europa League game against Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv

The green banner spelled out “Jihad Legia” in Arabic-style script across one end of the stadium before the Sept. 29 match.

UEFA’s disciplinary rules prohibit “political, offensive or provocative” acts at stadiums.

UEFA can punish teams by ordering them to host matches in empty stadiums.

Hapoel and Legia will play again in Israel on Dec. 15.
