Timeline: Hamburg SV suffer first ever relegation

Former European champions Hamburg SV were relegated for the first time on Saturday, ending their record uninterrupted run in the top division since the Bundesliga's creation in 1963.

Unlike Bayern Munich who won promotion in 1965, Hamburg, the six-time German champions, were one of the initial Bundesliga teams 55 years ago.

Here are some of the club's milestones over the years:

1977 Signing of Kevin Keegan for 500,000 pounds ($677,000.00) from Liverpool breaks British transfer record.

1980, Hamburg crush Real Madrid 5-1 in the European Cup semi-final, second leg in what is considered one of the club's finest games.

1980 European Cup runners-up after defeat by Nottingham Forest in the final.

1981 Austrian coach Ernst Happel joins club to lead them to European Cup victory and successive Bundesliga titles in their most successful spell.

1983 German champions

1983 European champions. Hamburg beat Juventus 1-0 in the final.
