Egypt have won the right to host the 2021 World Men’s Handball Championship, the International Handball Federation (IHF) announced on Friday.

After fiercely competing with Hungary to host the tournament, Egypt managed to beat off competition from their European rivals to be declared the 2021 Handball Championship hosts.

Egypt last staged the international competition in 1999, where Sweden were crowned champions after defeating Russia in the final.

At that time, Egypt managed to make it to the quarter-finals after overcoming Tunisia in the previous round, but a defeat to finalists Russia denied the hosts a place in the semis.

Egypt's best-ever place in a World Cup championship came in 2001, when they finished fourth in 2001.

The world governing handball body IHF is headed by the Egyptian Hassan Mostafa, who has retained his post since 2000.
