Egyptian swimmer Farida Osman continued her outstanding performances at the World Championship in Budapest after reaching the Women's 50m freestyle semi final, setting a new personal and African record in the process.

Osman came in 9th place in the preliminary round race Saturday, timing 24.78 seconds to improve her previous record of 24.91.

Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden came at the top of the heats with a time of 24.08s.

Farida has already reached the women's 50m butterfly final for the third time in a row after finishing eighth in Friday's semifinals, setting a new personal and African record in the process.

After breaking her own record Friday morning, finishing fifth in the 50m butterfly heats with a time of 25.74 seconds, Osman even bettered that figure with a 25.73 seconds finish in the competition’s semis.

The 22-year-old will take part in the final Saturday.

Having finished seventh in the World Championship in Barcelona 2013, Osman became the first-ever Egyptian swimmer to qualify for a final at any FINA World Championship.

Two years later, she finished fifth in the 50m fly at the 2015 World Championship after clocking 25.78 seconds, an African record at the time.

Also Saturday, Egypt's Ahmed Akram failed to reach the Men's 1500m freestyle final. Akram, 20, ended Saturday's heats in 10th place, timing 14:59.56 minutes. Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine topped the heats with a time of 14:44.11m.

The FINA World Championships – or World Aquatics Championships – are the main global competition for aquatic sports (swimming, diving, high-diving, open-water swimming, synchronised swimming, and water polo).

The tournament runs from 14 to 30 July this year.
