Egypt’s tennis star Mayar Sherif made history in becoming the first Egyptian ever to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open after beating Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic.
The 24-year-old defeated Krunic (6-1, 6-2) on Wednesday in the final preliminary stage to secure a seat in the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2021 season.
The 128th on the world ranking – the best ranking to be achieved by an Egyptian female- will be competing for the second time in a Grand Slam after appearing - also as the first Egyptian player ever - in the French Open last September.
