Hosts Egypt kicked off their campaign in the main round of the World championship with a convincing 28-23 win over Russia in Cairo on Wednesday.

The Pharaohs were dominant throughout, especially in the first half as they led 15-8 at the interval.

Veteran star Ahmed Al-Ahmar produced a vintage performance, toying with Russia's defenders and scoring six goals. He was named the game's best player.

Keeper Essam El-Tayar also shone with multiple saves, while forward Mohamed Mamodouh Hashem was also superb.

Egypt are now level on four points with Slovenia and Sweden on top of their group in the main round.

Slovenia thrashed Macedonia 31-21 earlier on Wednesday. Sweden will take on Belorussia later in the day.

The first two teams in each group of the main round will advance to the quarter-finals.
