With skills in media-related fields in high demand in Egypt, Swedish photographer Rikard Österlund will be coming to Cairo to give a workshop on fashion photography from 18–20 May.
A local company, who call themselves Workshopers and have a policy of bringing in the top professionals in each field, have organised the event.
Ahram Online asked Österlund by phone if he had visited Egypt before and what he's seen of the photography and fashion industry here.
"I haven’t been over there for anything work-related; only purely on holiday to Luxor. What I’ve learned about the industry in Egypt is through research over the internet. I’m very excited to be going there, actually," says Österlund.
"There seems to be a lot going on there and a lot of opportunities. From fashion shows to photographers, there are some really good photographers out there!"
He wonders aloud if European fashion will become a stronger influence, since it is quite a short distance for Egypt-based people to go to London or to Paris.
Also, as Österlund points out, "Egypt's been a popular location for photography and filming for a very, very long time."
Österlund, who studied editorial and advertising photography, boasts clients such as designer Karen Millen and the National Geographic Channel.
The three-day workshop costs LE2,800, and some of the proceeds will go towards sponsoring the education of an underprivileged woman in Egypt.
