28 historic coins recovered before smuggling out of Cairo International Airport

The Antiquities Unit in Cairo International Airport in collaboration with the airport customs department folied today an attempt to smuggle a collection of 28 gilded, silver and copper coins.

Ahmed El-Rawi, Head of the Central Administration of the Antiquities Units in Ports, told Ahram Online that the coins can be dated to the Ottoman era and the Mohamed Aly Pasha family reign.

The seized coins are varied in shapes and sizes, and decorated with Arabic calligraphy.

El-Rawy explains that the coins were detected in the cargo village in the luggage of a passenger.

The coins were sent to the Museum of Islamic Art in Bab Al-Khalq for restoration and then to be put on a temporary display.
