The site is a place of pilgrimage for Christians, where it is believed that Jesus was baptized by Saint John the Baptist.

Jordan’s Baptism Site (Al-Maghtas) also includes remains of churches that are believed to have been built to mark the holy place.

Pope Francis made a pilgrimage to the site on May 24, 2014

The site was recently included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
