Cairo's underground musicians staged a protest against the recent crackdown by the Musicians' Syndicate
On Friday, 9 November, more than 100 underground musicians and supporters staged a protest outside El-Sawy Culturewheel after a crackdown by the Syndicate of Musicians on artists who perform without a permit or membership in the syndicate - which is illegal according to the 1979 law governing Egyptian artistic syndicates.
Members of the syndicate's board, along with director Mohamed El-Sawy, invited the protesters into the Culturewheel later in the evening to reach a compromise.
