Egypt's foreign ministry warned Egyptians returning from Libya not to travel to the Ras Gadir border crossing between Libya and Tunisia due to the dangerous living conditions there, a statement from the ministry obtained by news website Aswat Masriya said on Tuesday.

The ministry said two evacuation flights would make exceptional trips due to current circumstances, and urged Egyptians to steer clear of conflict areas and to use the Salloum border crossing between Egypt and Libya to return home.

According to government officials, around 50,000 Egyptian workers crossed into Egypt via the Salloum land border alone during July.

Flights to Tripoli have stopped due to spiking violence between Libyan militias this summer, the worst since the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Egypt has sent several evacuation flights to Tunisia in July and August, carrying thousands back to the country.

The International Organisation for Migration estimates that between 330,000 to 1.5 million Egyptians worked in Libya until Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in 2011.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Libyan counterpart Mohamed Abdel-Aziz proposed in a visit to Libya an initiative to disarm Libyan militias, an initiative to be sponsored regionally and internationally, the Egyptian foreign ministry has said.
