A partial solar eclipse will be visible in Egypt on Friday, the country's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics announced.

The partial eclipse will be visible from 11:10am to 12:30pm local time on Friday, reaching its peak at 11:48am, Ashraf Tadros, the head of the institution's astronomy division told Ahram Online.

Tadros warned against looking directly at the sun, which can damage the eyes even if the viewer is wearing sunglasses.  

The total solar eclipse will only be witnessed in the remote Faroe Islands off the northern coast of the UK.

The rest of Europe, North Africa and Asia will only witness a partial eclipse.

Also on Friday, a supermoon will be visible in Egypt. The phenomenon occurs when a full moon or a new moon comes to its closest position to the Earth, making it look bigger than usual.

This Friday also marks the spring equinox, when day and night are of equal length.

In April 2014 Egypt experienced a rare annular eclipse, where only the edge of the sun remained visible, and in late 2013, a partial eclipse was visible in the North African country.
