The Egyptian National Committee on Libya has called on all Libyan factions to work to achieve peace and put an end to the lax security situation in the war-torn North African state, the Egyptian military said in a statement on Wednesday.

The committee urged all parties to comply with the deal brokered by the UN in December 2015 to create a unity government, until a consensus addressing the concerns of the Libyan people is reached.

"Any unilateral decision by any Libyan party could lead to further escalation and chaos," the committee said.

The committee called on all factions to swiftly reach a consensus to set up state organisations to avert "serious consequences" when the two-year transitional period ends in mid-december, the statement added.

Two rival governments are competing for power in Libya – the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), based in Tripoli, and the House of Representatives in the eastern city of Tobruk.

Over the past months, Egypt has sponsored a diplomatic push to heal divisions in Libya.

In February, Egypt brokered a deal between Prime Minister Fayez Seraj of the Triploi government and Khalifa Haftar, a military commander supported by eastern factions. The two agreed to create a joint committee to negotiate reconciliation and elections by February 2018.
