Cairo prosecutors ordered the detention of two police officers for four days on Sunday, pending investigations into the death of a suspect in a police station in central Cairo earlier this week.
The prosecution ordered also the arrest of four low -ranking police officers from Hadayek El-Qobba police station.
The deceased was being held at the police station on suspicion of theft.
The prosecution is investigating the police officers on charges of torturing a victim to death, using cruelty and violence with a suspect in custody, and forging official documents.
On Saturday, new Interior Minister Mohamed Tawfik ordered the ministry's monitoring and inspection department to investigate the incident.
Torture is outlawed by Article 52 of the Egyptian constitution.
