The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces declared, in a statement, that no member of the Egyptian military will stand as a candidate in the forthcoming presidential elections, due to take place sometime in the coming year, once constitutional and other necessary reforms have been finalized.
 

The armed forces annoucement indicates that for the first time in the history of the Egyptian republic, a civilian is to be head of state.
