Dozens of Salafists (ultra-conservative Islamists) have attempted to break into the residence of the Iranian charge d'affaires in Cairo on Friday, according to Ahram's Arabic-language news website.
Chanting anti-Iran slogans, the Salafists hurled stones at the residence before police intervened to cordon off the building.
The Islamists are angry at what they perceive as Iran's attempts to "spread Shia Islam in Egypt". They are also incensed by Iran's support of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who is facing a two-year-old revolt.
