EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton has said ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi is well but that she does not know where he is being held.

"Mohamed Morsi is fine, I met him and we had a friendly discussion for two hours," Ashton told a press conference on Tuesday.

"I do not know where he is, it is an undisclosed location,” said the EU foreign policy chief. "He is in good health and he sends good wishes to the outside world."

Morsi has access to TV and newspapers, she confirmed.

Ashton added that she would not have come to Egypt unless she could see the ousted president. She also denied reports that she had offered Morsi a "safe exit."

Regarding her efforts to help broker a deal to end the violence and solve the political crisis that has engulfed the country, Ashton insisted that she did not come to tell Egyptians what to do.

The EU wanted to "help the people of Egypt determine their own future," she said. "This great country has to move forward, and has to do so in an inclusive way... We need to find a calm solution to the situation."

The right to peaceful protest must be protected, Ashton emphasised.

It is expected that Ashton will hold another press conference with interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei.
