A new book will be released soon under the title ‘El-Shater Morsi’, by journalist Mostafa Fahmy, which will examine the violations of freedom of expression in Egypt since President Mohamed Morsi took office in June 2012.

The book documents examples of the arrests of political activists, beating of journalists, banning of certain public figures from appearing on state television, and the television channels that were closed during Morsi’s term.

The book’s title carries a play on words, as El-Shater may refer to leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Khairat El-Shater who is often accused of dominating Morsi behind the scenes. The word ‘shater’ also means clever in Egyptian Arabic, implying that Morsi has shown skills in violating freedom of expression.

Fahmy previously released a book titled ‘Ahlan Bil Modaraa’ (‘Welcome Armoured Vehicle’), in which he documents the famous video showing a young Egyptian man standing in front of an advancing armoured vehicle on 25 January 2001.
