A retrospective exhibition of paintings by artist Hassan Al-Aasar opened at the Saad Zaghloul Cultural Centre. 

From day one, this artist was influenced by the aesthetic form of the Arabic alphabet and its dynamic movements, which helped him to reshape the letters as an artistic element with its own special aesthetic. 

Referring to studying in Italy in the 1970s, Al-Aasar said, “I benefited a lot from Islamic art and was able to produce works that combine Islamic, Coptic and ancient Egyptian inspirations. I believe Islamic art is special, no matter how much you study it, it will surprise you with new elements every day”. It was while there that he began to explore calligraphy’s potential, creating well received engravings and paintings, using the mosaic and fresco techniques for which he will become famous.

According to Khaled Sorour, Head of the Fine Arts Sector, “Hassan Al-Aasar, a capable professor and one of the symbols of the contemporary art movement, has contributed to enriching the art scene... in addition to the academic mission to which he has devoted much time and effort.” 

The exhibition is on until 28 November.
