Egypt's Ahly football team has arrived in Cairo Sunday after facing Sudanese side Al-Hilal Omdurman away from home in a match that witnessed 15 minutes of high tension when some of the host's fans invaded the pitch and forced the referee to call off the game before completing it under tightened security.

The Red Devils survived a late scare in Sudan's Omdurman to book their place in the African Champions League quarterfinals following a tense 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal on Saturday.

“The Egyptian embassy provided special buses to transport Ahly fans in Sudan who were attending the game to make sure of their safety outside the stadium," read a statement on Ahly's official website.

“The Egyptian ambassador to Sudan made calls with Sudanese security officials to secure Ahly's fans who attended their team's game against Al-Hilal,” the statement added.

"Ahly's chairman Mahmoud El-Khatib also followed the fans' departure from the stadium without any violence,” according to the statement.

The Egyptian ambassador to Sudan thanked the Sudanese authorities for securing the Ahly crew following their late departure from the stadium after waiting for fans to leave the pitch.

Tensions boiled over with 15 minutes remaining as Al-Hilal players harangued the referee more than once.

Two fans invaded the pitch and a barrage of projectiles were thrown onto the field, forcing a seven-minute stoppage as security forces formed a cordon around officials and both teams.
