CAF to hold Champions League group stage draw on Friday

The draws of the CAF Champions League group stage and CAF Confederation Cup's additional 2nd preliminary round will be held in Cairo on Friday

The draw of the CAF Champions League group stage will be held on Friday 8 January 2021 in CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt at 12:00 GMT (14:00 Cairo local time), The CAF announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement on the CAF’s official website, the draw of the CAF Confederation Cup’s additional 2nd preliminary round will also be held at the same event.

The CAF considered Egypt’s Zamalek automatically qualified to the group stage after the failure of their opponents, Gazelle FC of Chad, to show up for their game in the 32nd round.

Ahly, holders of the title, are one step away from a spot in the group stage after securing a first-leg advantage by beating rivals Niger's Champions, Sonidep. Both teams will meet tonight in Cairo for the return match.

At the Confederation Cup, last season's finalists, Pyramids FC, managed to beat Libyan side, Ittihad Tripoli, 1-0 in the first leg on 22 December. Both teams will meet tonight in Cairo in the return match.

Arab Contractors, Egypt’s second representative in the tournament, tied 0-0 against Tunisia’s Etoile Sportive du Sahel in the first leg. Both teams will meet on Wednesday in the return match in Tunisia.

CAF announced the dates of the Champions League group stage matches and also the Confederation Cup’s additional 2nd preliminary round matches, which are as follows:

Total CAF CL Group Stage:

• Match Day 1 – 12/13 February 2021

• Match Day 2 – 23 February 2021

• Match Day 3 – 5/6 March 2021

• Match Day 4 – 16 March 2021

• Match Day 5 – 2/3 April 2021

• Match Day 6 – 9/10 April 2021

Total CAF CC Additional 2nd Preliminary Round:

• 1st Leg – 14 February 2021

• 2nd Leg – 21 February 2021
