Essam Sharaf appoints eight new governors while the 6 October and Helwan governorates are incorporated into Giza and Cairo respectively
Interim Prime Minster Essam Sharaf has announced the appointment of eight new governors as well as the end of two new governorates.
Abdel Qawi Khalifa has been named as governor to Cairo, Ali Abdel Rahaman that for Giza, Emad Michael is Qena’s governor, Hamad Abdel Maqssoud for Suez , Ibrahim Hammad in Assiut, Ashraf Helal to Menofiya and Muhammad Abdel Qader to Sharqiya.
Dismissing the previous incumbents, who were all appointed by the ousted president Hosni Mubarak, was a demand of the revolution from its inception.
The 6 October governorate has been incorporated into Giza while Helwan reverts back to the authority of Cairo.
The two former governorates were formed in April 2008 by a presidential decree with the aim of easing the burden placed on Cairo and Giza, Egypt's most densely populated governorates.
