The Muslim Brotherhood will not try to win a majority of the seats in both houses of the Egyptian parliament in the next elections "even if they have a chance to get these seats," said Mahmoud Ezzat, the group's deputy supreme guide.

The Brotherhood announced yesterday the apporval of its Guidance Bureau to participate in parliamentary elections. Candidates from the group are expected to run for between 45 and 50 per cent of the available seats.

Ezzat also denied the existence of splits in the rank and file of the group, including a reported revolt by some of its young members. "Taking tough measures against those who do not submit to the group's decisions does reduce the cohesion or threaten its unity," he said.
