Dr. Amr Helmy told Tahrir protestors that all costs for injuries sustained during the revolution have been paid for by Egypt's health ministry
Dr. Amr Helmy, Egypt’s newest health minister, appointed as part of the latest cabinet reshuffle, took the stage at Tahrir Square to address the protesters directly. Helmy began by denying claims of designating a portion of the ministry’s budget (LE90,000 as alleged) to spend on the medical treatment of former president Hosni Mubarak.
Another claim the new minister denied was that protestors injured during the revolution had paid for medical treatment at “their own expense,” declaring that the ministry has compensated injured persons for all medical costs. Helmy expressed his hope that one day no Egyptian citizen would have to pay for their own medical treatment.
The visit to Tahrir Square was the newly appointed health minister’s his first public appearance since the cabinet announcement. The new minister has also asked to meet those protestors on hunger strikes in the square.
