Leading opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei has cancelled a press conference planned for 1pm andreleased a statement announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race.

"The previous regime has not fallen yet," a statement on his Facebook page said by way of explanation.

ElBaradei is currently holding a closed meeting with several media figures and a number of his advocates. As of 2pm, the meeting has not yet finished.

Journalists were not allowed to attend the meeting and were told there will be no press conference.

ElBaradei's statement will be published shortly on Ahram Online.
