Mohamed Saad El-Katatni, former secretary of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, has been officially voted as speaker for the People's Assembly, winning 399 votes from his fellow MPs in Egypt's first post-Mubarak People's Assembly. In second place was Essam Sultan of the liberal Islamist Wasat Party, who took 87 votes.
