A court in Mansoura has sentenced 24 university students to between two and five years in jail.

They were found guilty of protesting illegally, being members of a banned organisation, destroying public property and assaulting police personnel.

Security forces arrested the students, who were protesting in support of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, during clashes at Mansoura University on 12 November 2013.

Two security checkpoints were torched and the pharmacy faculty building was stormed.

Three female students were among those sentenced.

Menna Allah Mostafa and Abrar El-Anani received two years in jail, while Yousra El-Khatib was sentenced to three years.

After the verdict, security forces dispersed a protest outside the court by relatives of the defendants and supporters of Mohamed Morsi.
