Coaltion formed by businessman Ahmad Fadali's Independence Current says it wants 'revolutionary' parliament without Islamic or corrupt figures

A new coalition in favour of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has been formed to run in the country's upcoming parliamentary elections, said Ahmad Fadali, general coordinator for the Independence Current, the political movement forming the coalition.

The coalition – aptly named "Supporting the President" – includes many figures who are aiming to form a "revolutionary" parliament that doesn't include Islamic or corrupt figures, Fadali said at a press conference on Sunday.

The Independence Current was formed in December 2012 as an opposition alliance to the ruling government of then-president Mohamed Morsi.

Last month, Fadali and members of the movement paid for an airplane which flew around with a large poster of El-Sisi as part of the former army chief's presidential campaign.

Meanwhile, talks initiated by former presidential candidate Amr Moussa have been taking place lately to form another pro-Sisi coalition with an eye on parliamentary seats.

The date for Egypt’s parliamentary elections has not yet been set. However, the new constitution, passed on 18 January, stipulates that preparations for Egypt's parliamentary polls must begin within six months of its ratification, or before 18 July.
