Fathy Sorour has been taken to prison for 15 days following investigations into the events of 2 February when many peaceful protesters died or were injured
Fathy Sorour, former speaker of the People's Assembly, was today remanded in custodyfor 15 days on accusations of taking part in planning the “Battle of the Camel”, the infamous storming of Tahrir Square by National Democratic Party thugs on 2 February that left many anti-regime protesters dead and injured.
Sorour was taken from the investigation office amid high security, and with crowds chanting against him outside.
The fact-finding committee formed to look into the causes of violence against peaceful protesters during the January 25 Revolution released a report Tuesday that points a finger at the two sons of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, former head of the Shura Council, the upper house of parliament, Safwat El-Sherif, lawyer Mortada Mansour, and business tycoon Ibrahim Kamel as masterminds of the events of 2 February.
Sorour had been speaker of Parliament since 1990 until the Egyptian Revolution in 2011.
