According to Al-Ahram Arabic news website, the mosque is affiliated with a Sufi order in Al-Tawil district. No casualties have been reported.

North Sinai, on the border with Israel, has suffered a security vacuum for years, particularly since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer.

Suspected Islamist militants based in the peninsula have waged a high-level insurgency against security forces, to which the army has responded with counter-insurgency operations.

In 2011,a series of attacks against Sufi shrines took place across Egypt. Most of the attacks were instigated by Salafists who believe the shrines are an abomination against Islam.
