President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi says Egypt won't abandon the Palestinian cause, won't choose between regime and opposition in Syria

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Sunday that Egypt neither supports the Syrian regime nor the Syrian opposition, MENA reported.

El-Sisi, in a meeting with the editor-in-chiefs of Egyptian newspapers, added that Egypt is equally unbiased to both sides in Syria.

He said that there are internal as well as domestic elements at play in Syria and that Egypt's efforts are focused on thwarting any scheme to divide Syria.

He said Egypt's sole interest in the issue is to preserve the unity of Syria's territory and to protect it from the danger of division.

Egypt, according to El-Sisi, is working to reach a peaceful solution to the situation in Syria.

El-Sisi touched upon the Gaza conflict as well in the meeting.

He said Egypt won't abandon the Palestinian cause and is still holding its position on forming a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

He added that the "price of lost lives of our brothers and children in Gaza should act as an incentive to find a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause."

El-Sisi said Egypt won't be idle in meeting the humane demands of "our brothers in Gaza" through the Rafah border crossing.

However, he added that the Rafah crossing is also a matter of Egypt's national security.
