Art Alert: Zawya hosts animation weekend

Cairo's art house cinema Zawya is screening feature and short animation films between 25 and 28 September


For four consecutive days, Zawya will screen a selection of feature and short animation films by Arab as well as international filmmakers.

Screenings will be followed by discussions with the filmmakers, shedding light on specifics regarding producing animated films.

Zawya's first animation weekend will run between 25 and 28 September, opening with Sita Sings the Blues, an American production featuring the Goddess from Indian epic, The Ramayana.

Sita accompanies Lord Rama on a 14-year exile into the forest and is abducted by Ravana, the ruler of Lanka. The following sequence of events tell the tale of Rama and Sita, along with a biographical account of the director's relationship with her husband.

The film received a special mention in the 2008 edition of Brlinale and went on to scoop two other awards in France during the same year, in Annecy and Avignon.

The list of Arab shorts will include films from Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Tunisia and Jordan.

The Belgian feature, Approved for Adoption will also be screened on the closing day.

Thursday 25 September: Sita Sings the Blues
Friday 26 September: Arab animated shorts
Saturday 27 September: International animated shorts
Sunday 28 September: Approved for Adoption

Screenings start at 6.30pm
