Three-day road closure in Cairo's Moqattam to assess mountain safety

Roads leading to Moqattam will be closed from Thursday through Saturday to enable maintenance work aimed at preventing rock falls

A main road leading to Moqattam will be closed for three days while engineers carry out maintenance work designed to prevent rock falls.

The road leading to the district in south-eastern Cairo from the Citadel will be closed in both directions from Thursday until Saturday night.

The closure comes after experts recommended the removal of certain large rocks to prevent a possible rock fall, local governor Galal Mostafa said in comments carried by state news agency MENA.

Motorists are asked to take detours, including via the entrances to Moqattam on the Autostrad, near Nasr City, and the Ring Road.

In 2008, over 100 people were killed when eight huge boulders fell from Moqattam mountain onto the slum district of Dweiqa.

Moqattam is home to over 100,000 people, according to 2013 official estimates.
