South Africa's ruling party says one of its prominent members has been shot.

The African National Congress said in a statement Monday that Jackson Mthembu, a member of parliament and the party's former national spokesman, was shot in a robbery in the country's eastern Mpumalanga province on Sunday night. Mthembu was shot while at an ATM, where his bank cards were stolen.

Mthembu was shot in the chest but was able to drive to himself to a nearby hospital. He is currently receiving medical treatment in the intensive care unit of a local private clinic.

The official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, wished Mthembu well. The ANC's alliance partner, the Congress of South African Trade Unions demanded South African police find and arrest the attackers.
