Cairo's art house cinema Zawya returns this week to its same location - Odeon Cinema - after its team announced they would be moving to another theatre

Cairo's Zawya, the art house cinema established by Misr International Films in March, is set to return on Wednesday to its same location in downtown's Odeon Cinema after a month-long hiatus.

Zawya was set to move to Karim Cinema, in the northern end of downtown, but the move was cancelled.

A post on Zawya's Facebook page said that September was a good month for the cinema, which combined with some "last minute negotiations" helped it secure a new one-year deal with Odeon's owners, New Century.

According to the Zawya team, September was their best month yet in terms of audience turnout, with releases like Jews of Egypt II and Rock the Casbah and a Youssef Chahine retrospective outselling the commercial releases on Odeon's screens.

Zawya will re-open on Wednesday with French film 2 Automnes 3 Hivers (2 Autumns 3 Winters) by Sébastien Betbeder, while a special programme of screenings curated by Cimatheque will take place starting Thursday.

On Thursday, Zawya will be collaborating with a local collective of cinephiles in the Delta city of Tanta to host a special back-to-back screening of Jews of Egypt and its sequel at 5pm and 7pm respectively.

In November Zawya will host part of Medrar's seventh annual Cairo Video Festival, along with the annual Panorama of the European Film.
