Defending champions Egypt beat France 2-0 on Saturday to finish fifth in the women’s world team squash championship in New Zealand.

Egypt claimed a consolation win over France following their surprise quarter-final exit at the hands of Malaysia on Friday.

Malaysia, inspired by world number one Nicol David, staged a superb fightback to eliminate holders Egypt with a 2-1 victory.

Australia beat top seeds England 2-1 to claim the crown, thanks to a brilliant display from Sarah Fitz-Gerald, who came out of a seven-year retirement to help her country to its first team triumph since 2004.
